In the first quarter of 2023, China's personal computer market shipments decreased by 24%

In the first quarter of 2023, the shipment of personal computers (desktops, notebooks and workstations) in Chinese Mainland dropped by 24% year-on-year to 8.9 million units.

After the reopening, commercial activities have recovered, but businesses and consumers' spending on computers remains conservative. The shipment volume of desktop computers (including desktop workstations) decreased by 28% to 2.8 million units, while the shipment volume of laptops (including mobile workstations) decreased by 22% to 6.1 million units. Tablet shipments rose against the trend, with a year-on-year increase of 38% in total shipments to 6.5 million units.

The shipment volume in the commercial market decreased by 27% year-on-year, with particularly weak demand from small and medium-sized enterprises. Although the shipment volume in the consumer market has slightly improved, it still significantly decreased by 21% year-on-year. Emma Xu, an analyst at Canalys, said: At present, the Chinese economy has entered a recovery phase, but there are no obvious signs of improvement in the personal computer market. From the overall performance of business, there are signs of recovery in the service industry, but commercial investment and IT spending are still relatively weak. Especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, their operations still face budget constraints, and given the current economic situation, many companies will also delay spending on equipment . Since the first quarter, China's overall consumer spending has been relatively strong, but it is mainly concentrated in areas such as tourism and hotel accommodation, and has not been used to purchase new computers. Although the short-term market trend is not satisfactory, some positive signals can still be seen, indicating further recovery in the second half of the year. The government and large enterprises are expected to prioritize driving the recovery of personal computer demand. Due to customers being more cautious in spending in the short term, manufacturers need to adjust their products, add services, and even provide customers with more choices in financing and payment to gain more opportunities

Lenovo still ranks first among Chinese PC manufacturers, but its shipments in the first quarter of 2023 decreased by 24% to 3.3 million units. Huawei performed strongly this quarter, with a 34% increase in personal computer shipments, approaching 1 million units, ranking second. In third place, HP's shipment volume decreased by a relatively small amount of 7%, and the manufacturer has once again reiterated its commitment to listing China as an important sales and manufacturing market. Dell has experienced the largest decline in personal computer shipments among the top five manufacturers in China, with a 45% decrease, ranking fourth. Asus ranks fifth with a shipment volume of 700000 units.

In terms of the tablet market, driven by promotional activities and various new products from manufacturers, the market performance is relatively resilient, with a year-on-year growth of 38%. Xu Ying stated: With the launch of tablet products with more diverse products and prices, the penetration rate of tablets in China is constantly increasing. Manufacturers are currently innovating to improve the performance of tablets in production and work, including the use of keyboard and stylus accessories, equipped with applications that support work and learning. Through these measures, the pillar position of tablets in the broader device ecosystem strategy has been strengthened, which can support factories In the future, businesses will fully seize the demand from the fields of consumption, business, and education. “

Apple is in a leading position in the tablet market, with shipments reaching 2.5 million units, more than doubling. In contrast, the performance was relatively weak in the same period last year due to the interference of the COVID-19 epidemic. Huawei's tablet shipments increased by 23% to 1.1 million units. But as other local brands continue to launch and expand their product lines, Huawei is also facing more severe competitive pressure. Honor and Xiaomi ranked third and fourth, with synchronous growth rates of 66% and 13%, respectively. Lenovo ranks fifth with a 3% decrease in shipment volume, making it the only tablet manufacturer among the top five to experience a year-on-year decline.
